VikingVPN OSX Connection Guides
We have changed our recommendation for our OpenVPN client on OSX. We now recommend the Tunnelblick client for use over the Viscosity client. We have had multiple issues with Viscosity releasing updates that disrupt services for our customers. You can view a video guide on how to set up our service with the Tunnelblick client on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWTDg0ZBqHY
(The YouTube guide is behind and need to be updated, we recommend the guide below temporarily while we produce a new guide video.)
This is a guide to show you how to connect to VikingVPN services using the Tunnelblick client.
This guide should work for all recent versions of OSX (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite).
To get things working, you will need the following things:
- Tunnelblick - The Open-Source OpenVPN client for OSX. It is located here: https://tunnelblick.net/downloads.html (Note that for OSX "El Capitan" users, you will need the latest beta version of Tunnelblick, as an OSX update has recently broken the "import" function of the regular Tunnelblick client.)
- Your VikingVPN configuration files. You get those by logging in to the VikingVPN website and downloading a new set from the "Profile" area.
*WARNING* DO NOT EVER SHARE YOUR CONFIGURATION FILE WITH ANYONE. IT CONTAINS THE KEYS THAT KEEP YOUR CONNECTION SECURE.
After installing Tunnelblick, and retrieving your configuration files from the website. We need to import the configuration files into Tunnelblick. First you need to unzip the zip file that you downloaded from our website. Then you need to look inside of the folder after you unzip the file to decide which server cluster you want to connect to. You will get the best performance by connecting to the server cluster that is geographically the closest to you.
Double-click the config file for the server cluster you want to use. You will then get a prompt about importing the file into Tunnelblick, accept it.
This imports the config file which has your keys and settings into Tunnelblick.
Tunnelblick will be running in the upper right corner of your screen. You can click on it and go to "VPN details" to have the full Tunnelblick interface pulled up.
You will see your imported configuration on the left pane and a few simple settings in main pane of the setup. It is best to use the latest version of OpenVPN in the drop down menu for optimal performance. You can then easily connect and disconnect from this window. It will take about 10-35 seconds to fully connect. This is because we use very strong encryption.
Once you are connected, you can verify that you are connected by searching for “my IP” in Google in an incognito window (or just clear your browser cache if your browser does not support incognito mode). The result should be a VikingVPN server IP address, not your real IP.
You are all set up! ENJOY YOUR FREE AND OPEN INTERNET!
