The VikingVPN iOS, iPhone & iPad Install & Setup Guide

Warning: Due to a recent bug introduced in the latest version of OpenVPN Connect, iOS5 is temporarily not supported. If you have a jailbroken device, you can install OpenVPN Connect 1.0.1 and it will work in iOS5. The current version, 1.0.3, does not work in iOS5. This is due to code being added for the new 64 bit Apple processors in the iPhone 5S and iPad Retina. The temporarily unsupported devices are the iPad1 and the iPhone 2 and earlier.

This guide is designed to get your iOS device (iphone, ipad, ipod touch) set up to use our OpenVPN service. It should not require you to "jailbreak" your device, although this process is more complicated because Apple limits the functionality of your device with the built-in OS.

This guide assumes that you have already purchased an account with us.

Things you will need:
A PC or Mac OSX computer with iTunes installed.

Your iOS device that you are enabling our service on.

Step 1: Get the configuration file

*SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU HAVE ALREADY GENERATED A CONFIG FILE BEFORE FOR OTHER DEVICES, CREATING A NEW CONFIG FILE REVOKES THE OLD ONE. IT WILL NO LONGER WORK ON THE DEVICES IT IS INSTALLED TO!*

On the computer, sign into our website and click on the profile link on the top navigation bar.

Create a new connection certificate. This will download the configuration file to your computer. Note where you are saving it. You will need this information later.

The file will be downloaded as a pack of .zip files.  Extract the config file for the location you wish to connect to.

Step 2: Install OpenVPN Connect on your iOS device

Locate "OpenVPN connect" in the App Store. Download and install the app for free.

If you open the app now, you are greeted with a screen that looks like the one below. This is because OpenVPN needs the config file from the VikingVPN website to know how to connect and what settings to use. We are going to transfer this file using the iTunes sync method that is highlighted. *CAUTION* We do not recommend using the email method to transfer your configuration file. This is because the security of email is very poor, and your config file contains all of your secret keys!!

Now we must open iTunes on our PC/Mac, and sync our file. When you open iTunes and connect your device, you will want to go to the "apps" tab in iTunes. You'll see a screen that looks like this.

Once you click the "Add" button you will need to direct the app to your VikingVPN file that you downloaded to your PC. Once you have selected the file, your iOS device should immediately look something like this (you will not have to hit "sync").

You then tap on the "+" button to add the file to your profiles in OpenVPN. After doing that you will be met with this screen. This is the screen where you can now connect and disconnect from VikingVPN. You will be greeted with this screen on your iOS device every time you open the OpenVPN app from now on. From this screen you toggle your VPN on and off using the switch as you please.

When you are connected to the VPN, you should see the small icon in the upper left corner of the screen. This tells you that you are connected and your connection is encrypted and anonymous.

You can verify that it is working properly by browsing to google.com and typing "my ip" in the search with the VPN on and VPN off. The IP should change when you enable the VPN if everything is configured properly.

You are all set up! Enjoy your private, free and open internet!
